18% of American households have two generations of adults in the home, yet few homes were designed with this in mind. See this video we took of Lennar's response to the tremendous demand:

This home is in Lennar's Lexington at River Village project in Valencia, California and is competitively priced for the area. Marketed as "a home within a home", Lennar now offers NextGen options in 21 markets around the country. The basic model starts with a traditional home, with additional private space that offers a separate front door, a kitchenette, a full bath and a bedroom, and usually a small private yard and/or a one-car garage with plenty of storage. The space connects to the main house via an interior locking door.

In Irvine, CA, The New Home Company noticed a trend that buyers were purchasing more than one home in the same neighborhood so members of their family can live nearby. So, The New Home Company took the multi-generational concept one step further. They developed a "family compound" model at their Grove at Lambert Ranch community, which positions two single family homes together on adjacent lots, without a fence in between. The side courtyards and back yard are shared between the two homes, creating a much larger shared-but-still-private space. At a later date, a fence can be added and the homes sold separately if desired.

Builders everywhere, and especially where local cultures have a high propensity to live multigenerationally, should consider this product type as a potential option.
