According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, women comprise 9% of the 10.3 million US construction workers. Sheryl Palmer of Taylor Morrison is the only female CEO among the 19 publicly traded home builders.
In this podcast, Dean Wehrli interviews Alaina Money, the Founder and CEO of Garman Homes in Durham, NC. Alaina, along with 157 other members of the Women’s Housing Leadership Group, is on a mission to attract more women into the industry and into leadership roles.
Alaina entered the industry because home building was the industry where her friends loved coming to work every day. She began as a sales agent, found a company where she felt she could make a difference, and then started a blog called Build Like a Girl, which chronicled her experience rising through sales and marketing to CEO, with a pit stop in construction along the way. Alaina described her time in construction as a “gateway drug” for increasing her passion for the industry.
Her construction teams know she has “walked in their boots,” and she describes “flying trusses” days as some of the most fun days of her career. Check out this video to see what she’s talking about.
