Permit Plummet Is Astonishing

Single-family permits in the Northeast, Midwest and West are already below their respective troughs in 1991, and the South is well on its way to a similar decline. In all regions, single-family permits have declined by 50% or more from peak levels. This has resulted in a devastating impact on building product manufacturers and subcontractors, who have seen their revenue cut in half in a very short time period.

While the substantial declines in the South and West have been well-documented, very little attention has been paid to the Midwest and Northeast. In Chicago, only 9,100 SF permits have been issued in the last 12 months, which is 20% below the lowest level recorded in the last 25 years.

Multifamily construction has fared much better in comparison, and has kept total construction activity from falling to sub-1991 levels. Multifamily permits have declined just 21% from their most recent peak in September 2005.

This is the most current available data for all variables and markets.
